SEPANG: The Special Cabinet Committee on National Good Governance is aimed at enhancing the good governance framework by replacing the previous Special Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the objective is to strengthen good governance to successfully achieve the national agenda of promoting integrity and an anti-corruption culture.

The committee is part of the National Good Governance Strengthening Movement (Gerakan Pemantapan Tatakelola Nasional).

He also emphasised that its purpose is to prevent abuse of power, ensure the rights of every individual, and foster effective and comprehensive socio-economic development for the nation.

"I believe adherence to existing laws and regulations can cultivate a society with integrity, responsibility, and a strong aversion to corruption.

"Therefore, the four outlined reference terms are Institutional Reform, Policies, and Laws; Work Systems and Procedures; Monitoring and Evaluation and Cultivation of Values and Good Governance.

"These are structured to enhance accountability and value practices in the public service work culture," he said during his speech at the National Good Governance Symposium 2024.

During the event, Anwar launched the National Good Governance Strengthening Movement.

Azam also stressed that employees who practice integrity and good governance are crucial assets for the success of an organisation and a nation.

"It is not only emphasises the roles of ministries, departments, and government agencies, including state governments but also takes into account the inclusion of federal statutory bodies in the ministry's governance committee structure," he added.

He stated that the Integrity Unit (UI) and Integrity and Governance Unit (IGU) now must play stronger roles.

He said the reports from these units in statutory bodies are crucial references for the national good governance committee's monitoring.

"I believe the proactive efforts of UI and IGU can effectively tackle governance weaknesses and corruption within their organisations."
