GEORGETOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained a Village Community Management Council (MPKK) chairman for allegedly soliciting and accepting approximately RM5,000 in bribes.

The money was believed to have been given by a construction contractor as an incentive to avoid interference from the local authority.

According to sources, the male suspect in his 40s was arrested around 1.30pm yesterday.

The bribe was believed to prevent interference from the local council while carrying out additional construction activities and modifications to a residence despite already obtaining building plan approval from the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, Penang MACC director Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah Bee, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.

"The case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.

"However, the suspect will be released tomorrow (Jan 27) with MACC's bail after his statement is recorded," he said.
