BATU PAHAT: A man cradled his mother-in-law in his arm, teaching her to recite the Shahadah after she was run over by a container lorry in front of a biscuit factory at Kilometre 15, Jalan Yong Peng-Muar, near Tongkang Pechah, yesterday evening.

With a crushed left hip and leg, Hanitah Jais, 57, was reported to have fallen from her motorcycle after she was believed to have collided with a vehicle that had stopped waiting for the traffic light to turn green at about 7pm.

Her son-in-law, Airis Mukri, 39, who happened to be with the deceased but riding a different motorcycle, immediately rushed to her side.

Hanitah's eldest daughter, Mira Nazira Mohd Nazri, 32, said her husband kept teaching and encouraging her mother to recite the Shahadah while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

"My mother was in critical condition and died after about half an hour of receiving treatment at the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital Wednesday night."

Mira Nazira shared the family's sorrow and recalled her mother's recent change in demeanour.

She said her mother and husband worked at the same factory, and a few days before the accident, her mother seemed more reserved than usual.

Mira Nazira also expressed her concern for her younger sister Puteri Najiha, who was very close with their mother and could not accept her death.

She appealed to those who witnessed the incident and had it recorded on their dashboard cameras (dashcam) to come forward.

"We accept this as fate, but the dashcam (recording) is also important to help us take the next course of action," she said.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Ismail Dollah said the accident happened at a traffic light when Hanitah's scooter collided with a stationary Perodua Bezza, causing her to fall on the left lane.

"It happened at the same time a lorry passing by and ran over the victim's leg."
