MELAKA: An army corporal sustained injuries to his left wrist after being attacked with a machete by three unidentified individuals on Thursday.

Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit saod the incident occurred at around 9.30 pm when the 31-year-old victim had just withdrawn money from a bank in Sungai Udang here.

According to the victim, just as he had mounted his motorcycle and started the engine, three unknown individuals suddenly appeared to restrain him while pressing a machete to his waist.

"In a state of distress, the victim immediately accelerated and attempted to escape before feeling a slash from the machete on his left hand. Despite the pain, the victim managed to flee by entering a residential area, leaving his motorcycle at the front of a park," he said when contacted here.

Despite being in pain, the victim ran towards the Sungai Udang police station to seek refuge.

Due to the attack, the victim suffered a fractured left wrist, along with a severed tendon, and received treatment at the Melaka Hospital.

"It is understood that the motive behind the assault was not robbery but rather linked to a debt issue. However, we are still investigating the actual motive because the victim's belongings, including money, were not taken," he said.

He added that efforts to track down the suspects are underway, and the police are urging the public who witnessed or have information about the incident to come forward to any nearby police station.

Earlier, images purportedly showing the injuries sustained by the victim in an attempted robbery have been circulating on WhatsApp since Thursday.
