KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry today confirmed that its no-discount policy for summonses issued by the Road Transport Department (RTD) is still in place.

Minister Anthony Loke said the policy is a clear message directed to the people from the department about the importance of adhering to rules and regulations related all matters of road safety.

"The RTD has the responsibility to ensure the safety of road users in the country. For that reason, it was why we had introduced the no-discount policy for summonses issued by the RTD.

"This policy was in place when I was appointed as the Transport Minister in 2018 (under the Pakatan Harapan administration formed after the 14th general election in 2018).

"If all of you can remember, I had written off some 400,000 summonses issued under the Automated Enforcement System (AES), which was supposed to enable the government to generate about RM600 million in revenue at the time; but this was on a one-off basis so it would not become a precedent," Loke told reporters after visiting the ministry's booth at the Madani Government One-Year celebration event here today.

The last time a discount was offered for summonses issued by RTD, Loke said, was last year under the previous administration.

"At the time, I was not the Transport Minister," he said.
