KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is currently conducting quality of service tests for mobile network coverage nationwide, the Dewan Negara was told today.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this was to ensure that the level of service provided met the set standards.

He said a total of 3,280 areas nationwide, including 97 locations in Kuala Lumpur, had been audited as of Sept 30.

He said 4G coverage in populated areas in Kuala Lumpur had reached 100 per cent in the third quarter of this year.

"The audit is in the process of an analysis stage and issuance of notices under Section 51(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

"There are areas with less than satisfactory services, especially in building coverage; it could be caused by factors including network congestion and obstructions such as high-rise buildings," he said in reply to a question from Senator Datuk C. Sivaraj.

Fahmi said the MCMC requires cooperation from building owners and Joint-Management Body (JMB) to allow telecommunications companies to install in-building coverage solutions.

He said consumers can lodge reports at the MCMC portal, https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my

"I have several times asked telecommunication companies to take this matter seriously by reducing or scrapping costs on consumers to enhance coverage to 5G."

He said the drop in the inflation rate in the country's telecommunications sector from 0 per cent to -3.7 per cent in the past few months would hopefully see a reduction in telecommunication charges for consumers soon.
