KOTA BARU: The state government will give its full cooperation to the Federal government for the construction of a new bridge connecting Rantau Panjang to Sungai Golok in Narathiwat, Thailand.

Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said it is the state government's hope that the new Rantau Panjang bridge across the Golok River will become a reality.

"Of course, we (the state government) will give our full co-operation for the project as it will provide many benefits to Kelantan not only in terms of tourism but also trade between two countries.

"We really hope that it will become a reality soon as it will also benefitthe residents of Rantau Panjang and the development of the border town itself," he said today.

The new bridge would be second "friendship bridge" following the Muhibbah bridge.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the Thai government had agreed to the proposed construction of a bridge connecting Rantau Panjang in Kelantan to Sungai Golok in Narathiwat.

Anwar said this was agreed during a bilateral meeting with his counterpart Srettha Thavisin in Sadao.

He added the (Thailand) PM has agreed to begin the project latest by next year, subject to the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) approval and in an effort to expedite the process.

"I will inform this development to Kelantan Menteri Besar to expedite the process," Anwar said.
