GEORGE TOWN: Five people, including a baby, were rescued in a fire at a double-storey house in Taman Sri Nibong, Bayan Lepas here this morning.

The others were two women, in their 30s, and two children, aged three. The Bayan Baru fire and rescue station received an alert about the fire at approximately 7:20 am. Operations officer Mohd Firdaus Mohd Saad reported that all victims were safely brought out and given first aid before being referred to the hospital for further checks.

"When we arrived at the scene, there was a fire at which double-storey house used as a homestay (rumah penginapan)."The fire is believed to have started from the staircase on the top floor involving the lighting and ceiling structure.

"The victims were trapped inside the room on the top floor and were rescued and provided with first aid," he said. Firdaus said they managed to control the fire at 7.42am before the operation completed at 8.32am.

"Overhaul works are ongoing. "The cause of the fire and losses are under probe," he added.
