KUALA LUMPUR: Kepong member of parliament (MP) Lim Lip Eng has filed an emergency motion to get the government to expedite the extradition of former police officer Sirul Azhar Umar who was convicted of the murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibu in 2006.

Citing Standing Order 18(1), the DAP lawmaker said the motion was to ensure that the government guarantees the return of Sirul Azhar to serve his sentence in Malaysia in order to uphold justice.

"The above matter also fulfils the requirements under Standing Order 18(2), where it is a specific and urgent matter related to the public interest," he wrote in the motion submitted to the Speaker's office on Tuesday (Nov 14).

On Nov 12, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed the release of Sirul Azhar from an Australian immigration detention centre.

Yesterday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Sirul Azhar could file a review through his lawyer over the death sentence ruled against him in 2009.

Saifuddin, however, said the onus is on the former police officer on whether a review would be filed to change the sentence made against him.

He added that the review could be made considering that Malaysia has recently abolished the mandatory death penalty for a range of serious offences, including murder, terrorism, drug trafficking and treason.
