PEKAN: Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) has rolled out its first electric buses and vans at its campuses here.

Two units of the electric vehicle (EV) buses and vans each have been stationed at the Pekan, and Gambang campus along with the EV charging stations.

UMPSA vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Ts Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin said the 37-seater EV bus and 11-seater van was introduced in line with the country's green growth agenda.

"The use of the EV vehicles on campus utilises technology and innovation for the future generations. EV offers a better lifestyle by reducing carbon emissions thus providing innovative solutions to the energy industry.

"UMPSA has planned various initiatives that conserve resources and improve the quality of the environment towards becoming a sustainable campus. The university has now achieved encouraging progress to empower sustainable practices through various programmes across the campus," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Yuserrie said apart from the EV vehicles, UMPSA's sustainable campus initiative will be further boosted with various activities this year such as tree planting, energy and resources saving and carbon reduction.

"The sustainable initiative campaigns in campus include drinking plain water and bringing one's own water bottles, Jom Tapau which encourages one to bring their own container, UMPSA recycling day, reducing waste, and one step at a time to promote a healthy lifestyle.

"The other initiatives include organic waste segregation, composting for a greener future, going green by turning waste into sustainable resources, and carbon free vehicles which are sustainable practices on the road," he said.

He said in the 2022 UI-GreenMetric World University Ranking, a ranking on green campus and environmental sustainability, UMP was listed in 103 in the world and fifth in Malaysia.

The EVs replica key handing over ceremony was held at the Higher Education Ministry's office parking area in Putrajaya recently where Go Automobile Manufacturing Sdn Bhd executive director Wan Ahmad Wan Omar handed to Yuserrie as Higher Education minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin witnessed the event.
