KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Narcotics Crime Eradication Organisation (PJNM) is joining forces with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) to collaborate in raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and juvenile crimes, through prevention and early education.

Nada director-general Sutekno Ahmad Belon said the agency's 2022 statistics showed that the age category with the largest number of drug addicts was that of those aged 19 to 39 years.

He said 65.9 per cent, or 81,112 people, out of the total 128,325 addicts detected are categorised as youth, a group at a higher risk of substance abuse, particularly during the critical ages of 12 to 16.

Due to that, a campaign, "Comprehensive Campaign Towards A Drug-Free Malaysia And Juvenile Crime 2023" was launched today alligned with the government's commitment to combating drug abuse and protecting the nation's future.

The campaign encompasses a wide array of initiatives, such as anti-drug and juvenile crime awareness exhibitions, the distribution of informative materials on anti-drug and juvenile crime, and the dissemination of information kits to reach and educate the community.

"This is a concerning situation because at such a young age, children do not consider the consequences and effects of drugs; their thinking is typically concrete.

"We must be aware that students and young adults are the most important assets of the country, especially in shaping the future development of Malaysia as a respected and admired advanced nation by other countries," Sutekno said in his speech.

Citing the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, he said prevention helps the public develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to make the best choices or change risky behaviours.

At the same time, he also highlighted that prevention assists the general public in developing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills required to make informed choices and modify potentially harmful behaviours.

"The prevention programme aims to enhance protective factors and eliminate or reduce the risk factors associated with drug crimes and substance abuse issues.

"Prevention is a crucial investment in families, communities, and the nation because it can save lives and nurture the young leaders of the future.

"Limited financial resources, significant and complex issues, necessitate ongoing and effective prevention programs and practices involving various stakeholders," he added.
