TELUK INTAN: In a significant milestone, the Malaysian government is on the cusp of creating its first-ever Bandar PR1MA township.

Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming has announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for this pioneering project is scheduled for next year, signifying a transformative leap in urban development.

He said this visionary initiative, situated on a substantial 57.5 hectares of land adjacent to the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris' (UPSI) Teluk Intan campus, comes with an estimated gross development value of RM800 million.

The development of the township, amongst others, would include constructing about 1,700 housing units worth RM100 million under the new module of the People's Housing Project (PPR), Nga added.

"For the wellbeing of the future residents within the township, the ministry has plans to introduce essential amenities like business premises and other vital infrastructure, ensuring the township's prosperity.

"The planning is in place, and the groundbreaking ceremony for this project is expected to take place next year.

"The Bandar PR1MA township will undoubtedly complement the opening and operation of the UPSI Teluk Intan campus," he told reporters today.

Nga, also the Teluk Intan member of Parliament, said he would meet Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin soon to check and discuss the progress of the UPSI Teluk Intan campus construction.

On May 5 this year, Nga announced the construction of the UPSI Teluk Intan campus on 32ha of land in Batu 4 of Jalan Changkat here, which was delayed since 2017, would continue with an additional allocation of RM130 million.

During the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election nine years ago, the then-prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced the construction of the UPSI Teluk Intan campus with an allocation of RM120 million that was included in the 10th Malaysia Plan.

Earlier, Nga handed over some RM2.897 million in allocation to 36 primary schools within the Hilir Perak district meant for maintenance and upgrading works.
