TELUK INTAN: Floods in Teluk Intan which have been going on for more than 60 years may no longer reoccur after the Local Government Development Ministry has allocated RM3.4 million to upgrade the drainage system.

Its minister Nga Kor Ming said that he had instructed the ministry to allocate RM3.4 million to the Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI) to clean the main drains and upgrade the drainage system, especially in the housing area.

"Prevention is better than cure. After this, I am going to the Teluk Intan Municipal Council to listen to a briefing by its president. Previously, we always heard that there was no allocation given, but now there is now no more reason.

"The allocation is there and it's time for the MPTI and Hilir Perak district Irrigation and Drainage Department to be ready and to ensure that one day, Teluk Intan will be free from flooding.

"This has been my dream and I believe there's a will, there's a way. All quarters must cooperate to realise this dream," Nga, who is also a Teluk Intan member of Parliament, told reporters after visiting SJK(T) Sithambaram Pillay and distributing 50 laptops to the students, today.

Nga added that this allocation was part of the RM20 million which he had announced on Oct 30 for drainage system cleaning works in preparation for the North East Monsoon season, scheduled to start this month.

"From this allocation, RM3.4 million has been put aside for Teluk Intan and this upgrading drainage system will only apply to residential areas.

"For village's traditional area, it is under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, led by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also deputy prime minister.

"The allocation must come from this ministry," he said.
