GEORGE TOWN: After proposing for the setting up of a Special Financial Zone (SFZ) in Penang, former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng has called for a Central Business District (CBD) in Butterworth.

The DAP national chairman and Bagan member of parliament said the time had come for a new CBD in Butterworth to catalyse higher economic development for an international Butterworth.

He said the pace of development around the Bagan parliamentary constituency had been increasing over the past 15 years, especially in the Raja Uda area.

"Now, the time has come for Ampang Jajar to be developed as a new business centre.

"Many development projects have been carried out over the years in the parliamentary constituency area such as road construction and flood mitigation projects.

"This is an effort to develop the Bagan community, and this effort is an ongoing effort to make Bagan an international city," he said in a Facebook post today.

On Sept 13, Lim had proposed in Parliament for the setting up of a SFZ in Penang just like the one in Forest City.

He said the proposal of the SFZ for Penang was based on it possessing all the critical competitive and comparative advantages of an industrial state, which also happened to be the nation's largest exporter.

He subsequently called for undivided support from all Penangites, the state government and all elected representatives, including the opposition, to secure the federal government's approval for the SFZ.
