KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) endorses the creation of a Wage Transparency Act to increase the employer's salary transparency.
MTUC president Mohd Effendy Abdul Ghani said that the most important thing was the implementation of the salary offered as well as periodic enforcement to ensure that no workers were oppressed regarding wages.
"We believe that if a union exists in an industry sector, then this issue does not arise because the union will struggle for the welfare of its members and employees.
"In addition, there is also a Mutual Agreement that will come into force and be reviewed every three years.
"The agreement will specify the pay scale for every employee bound by the agreement," he said when contacted today.
Mohd Effendy stated that the issue was more pertinent to Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) or the absence of labour unions at the workplace.
He said MTUC viewed that there was room for improvement to ensure that employers offer fair wages to employees.
Recently, Muar member of parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abd Rahman through the social media platform proposed for Wage Transparency Act to give graduates and workers the opportunity to evaluate the best salary offer for them.
He said that the candidates were offered low wages due to lack of information about the wages in the market.
He said that the workers would be at a disadvantage when negotiating with future employees.
Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar said the government would look into the proposal.
As a responsible government, he said that every proposal that benefitted the people would be scrutinised as much as possible.
