KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to scrap new airport plans for Tioman Island, after considering conservation of its natural resources.

Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the Cabinet has decided to not proceed with the construction.

"The Cabinet has in principle agreed to not continue with the building of the new Tioman airport, which would involve 76 per cent reclamation of sea area," FMT quoted Nik Nazmi as saying in a statement.

He said the decision is in line with the ministry's priorities on preservation, conservation and the use of natural resources in a responsible manner.
