MANJUNG: Four people were burnt to death and one person suffered serious injuries when the car they were travelling in caught fire. 

The 5pm incident occurred at KM220 of the West Coast Expressway (WCE) northbound near Changkat Cermin here, today. 

A Perak Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said they received a distress call at 5.11pm and a team of firemen from Ayer Tawar and Sitiawan were rushed to the scene. 

"Upon arrival, a Proton Saga which landed in a drain caught fire and there were five people in the car. 

"Four of them were burnt to death while another person suffered serious injuries and is believed to be still alive," he said, adding that the identities of the deceased have yet to be ascertained. 

The injured victim has been identified as Shariff Mohammed Sidek Mohammed, 54 who hails from Taman Mas Baru, Chemor. 

He added that the dead would be taken to the Seri Manjung Hospital here for post-mortem. 

It is learnt that all the victims work in Lumut and they were heading back to Ipoh.
