GEORGE TOWN: A 40-day-old baby suffered injuries to her head when she was believed to have been thrown to the floor by her uncle at an apartment unit in Sungai Pinang.

Her elder sister, aged 3, suffered a broken leg and bleeding from her mouth when the same uncle threw her from the first floor of the apartment building.

The 29-year-old suspect later slit his right wrist.

Another of the girls' uncles said he had heard his mother screaming for help about 3.40pm.

When he went to see what was going on, he found his younger brother — the suspect — naked and bleeding profusely.

He said a neighbour helped him calm his brother down during the incident.

"Other family members took my elder sister's two children to the hospital. My brother said he had heard 'whispers' before he harmed the children," he said.

He said his family has asked for privacy.

"We hope everyone understands and respects the family's request. The suspect is my very own brother and has been undergoing traditional treatment due to some health issues for the past two months," he said.

It is understood that the children had been staying in the apartment, which belongs to their grandmother, because their mother was still in confinement.

Northeast police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong, when contacted, confirmed the incident.

"The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder."
