KUALA LUMPUR: The Pro-tem Committee will study the need for the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) to become an enforcement agency under the supervision of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC).

This is one the two issues which is the focus of the committee which was established after it was agreed upon by the Cabinet on April 19.

Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the committee will also look into several amendment proposals to the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission Act 2009 (Act 700).

She said this is a measure to strengthen EAIC.

"Following this, the committee will organise engagement sessions with interested parties, including government and opposition members of Parliament and non-governmental organisations, in the near future.

"EAIC was established through Act 700 which was gazetted on September 3, 2009 and took effect on April 1, 2011.

"At the moment, there are 21 enforcement agencies listed under Act 700 schedule and its usage for MACC is exempted through a provision under Subsection 1(5) of Act 700.

The unity government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is committed in creating a truly independent body which has the power to control effective discipline to inculcate and improve integrity among enforcement officers and agencies," said Azalina in a statement.

On the discussion session to strengthen EAIC, Azalina said among the issues discussed were the mandate from the Prime Minister regarding the proposal to create a new independent body and the role of EAIC in monitoring enforcement agencies' misconduct.

The first meeting was held at the Legal Affairs Division, the Prime Minister's Department (PMD) today.

Present were EAIC chairman Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan and Solicitor General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh.

Also present were representatives from EAIC, the Legal Affairs Division, the Attorney General's Chamber, MACC, Public Service Department and PMD.
