KLUANG: A 35-year-old lorry driver was killed when his vehicle laden with fruits crashed into a highway divider in an attempt to avoid a tyre in his path.

Kluang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said the victim had been identified as Muhammad Saifuddin Md Lazan, who sustained serious injuries to his head and body after being flung out of the lorry and landing under a bridge.

The 2.30am incident at Km68.3 of the North-South Expressway earlier today also involved a 68-year-old driver of a trailer carrying cement and a 26-year-old driver of a Honda Civic, who were both not injured.

"The drivers of the trailer and the Honda Civic could not avoid crashing into the lorry, resulting in the lorry to overturn.

"The victim died on the spot," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"All three vehicles from Kuala Lumpur were headed towards Johor Baru and investigations into the cause of the crash are underway," Bahrin said.

Renggam Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Shoromi Salih said nine firemen and a fire engine were despatched to the scene of the accident.
