BATU PAHAT: Over 100 people are still trapped in their homes in Kampung Parit Warijo, Seri Medan since floods struck the area two days ago.

It's village chief, Mohd Farhan Jamari, 34, the village needs a motorised boat to rescue stranded villagers after the inundation rose to the roof level of their houses.

"Now it has rained from 11 last night until 10 this morning and we used five boats owned by the public including three which are motorised, while two other vessels were row boats.

" A total of 11 village committee members in addition to the authorities and members of the public are involved in the rescue effort and have thus far managed to save 87 people.

"The youngest is a seven-month-old baby girl and the oldest is 90 years old. In addition to that, we rescued a 65-year-old male stroke patient, an 82-year-old ill woman and a 30-year-old physically disabled man," he said when contacted.

Farhan said he and the village committee members despite being flood victims themselves nevertheless reached out to rescue fellow villagers first out of concern and sympathy for their plight.

"When the water rose at 4 am two days ago, my family was sleeping and I managed to save them as well as a car and a motorcycle in addition to important documents.

"My 55-year-old mother, a 68-year-old father and 30-year-old wife were rescued and are now placed in a temporary evacuation centre," Farhan said.
