GEORGE TOWN: Heavy rain caused the third floor of a mall in Bayan Lepas here to be inundated with water after part of its ceiling came crashing down last night.

Photos and video footage of the incident have since gone viral on social media, showing the collapsed ceiling and flooding on the third floor.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

In an announcement to shoppers on its Facebook page today, Queensbay Mall said heavy rain last night had led water to overflow into parts of the mall at about 11.10pm, affecting several stores in the South Zone of Level 3.

It said the affected areas had been cleaned up and all tenants are open as usual for business today.

"Please be advised that one section of Level 3 is currently cordoned off for maintenance works.

"Thank you for your patience and support," it added.

Opened to the public in December 2006, Queensbay Mall is one of the largest shopping malls in Penang, which covers a gross built-up area of 2,500,000 sq ft (230,000 m2) and contains over 400 shop lots spread out over five floors.
