JOHOR BARU: There are currently 4,207 flood evacuees in Johor at 45 relief centres across six districts, with the latest centre set up in Muar.

Some 1,164 families were affected as at 2pm, according to the state emergency and rescue services department.

At 2pm yesterday, no relief centre was in operation, but by noon today, six were set up across Segamat, Kota Tinggi and Kluang, housing 298 families.

Three rivers have breached their respective danger levels-- Sungai Segamat in Segamat Kecil at 37.55m, followed by Sungai Gemas (19.13m) and Sungai Kahang in Kampung Kahang Contoh (15.7m).

A number of roads were also closed due to floods and a landslide. One landslide occurred in Kurau, at Jalan Ulu Tiram to Ulu Tebrau. In Kota Tinggi, water rose to 0.75m on Jalan Ladang Siang.

Jalan Mawai Lama (Rumah Burung) and Jalan Tanjung Sedili (Kampung Gambut) were also closed for light vehicles. Water rose 0.35m on both the roads.

In Segamat, water rose up to 0.7m and 0.6m on Jalan Senai-Gemas and Jalan Jabi Bukit Tempurung, respectively.

In Mersing, Jalan Johor Baru to Endau and Jalan Jemaluang to Batu Pahat were partially closed and cordoned off for light vehicles respectively. Waters rose to 0.2m and 0.35m for each oth the roads.

The number of flood victims, relief centres opened have been rising steadily alongside river levels since the state was pelted by continous rain on Sunday.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department had earlier announced that Johor was one of the states that was put on red alert following a three-day forecast of continous rain during the Northeast Monsoon.

The adverse weather was expected to be followed by floods.
