KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) is targeting over 4,000 delegates from around the world to participate in the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) International Forum 2024 (UIA2024KL).

PAM president Ar Abu Zarim Abu Bakar expressed confidence in achieving the target, citing its strong network within the global architecture community.

"We also expect to have 30 to 50 speakers for the forum. With the help of the UIA council to attract the foreign delegate, we are confident to reach these targets.

"We are expecting delegates from over 150 countries including Malaysia, and half of the attendees will be coming from overseas," Abu Zarim told the media at the soft launch of UIA2024KL.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall project implementation and building maintenance department director Hanum Ain Zainal said the forum is anticipated to generate a significant economic impact, with an estimated RM43.4 million in benefits and up to RM18.5 million in visitor expenditures, bolstering the Malaysian economy.

Hanum said this will be achieved through increased tourism as well as business opportunities.

"Kuala Lumpur is steadfast in its journey to emerge as a global frontrunner in crafting resilient, inclusive, and habitable urban landscapes.

"The UIA2024KL offers a golden opportunity for us to exchange insights, absorb global best practices, and cultivate partnerships that will propel us towards achieving our collective aspirations," she said.

Kuala Lumpur has been chosen to host the prestigious UIA2024KL from November 15-19 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

With the themed "Diversecity - Humanity and Sustainable Growth", the forum reflects Malaysia's unique cultural diversity and commitment to environmental stewardship.

It highlights the importance of inclusive and sustainable urban development practices that prioritise the well-being of communities and the environment.

The forum also aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly goals related to reducing inequalities, gender equality, peace justice and strong institutions.

Previously, the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and PAM announced that they had won the bid to host the UIA2024KL.

The final bid presentation was delivered in a hybrid format at the UIA 148th council meeting and extraordinary general assembly in Madrid.

The Malaysian team included the current president of PAM, and the chief executive officer of The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau, among 18 other members of the delegation.
