Flooding due to rain since yesterday in Bandar Penawar and Taman Desaru Utama, Kota Tinggi, Johor. - NSTP/NUR AISYAH MAZALAN

JOHOR BARU: There are now 3,612 flood evacuees in Johor with 35 relief centres opened across five districts which include Batu Pahat and Mersing.

A total of 1,014 families were affected as per the 8am status report provided by the state emergency and rescue services department.

At 8am yesterday there were no relief centres opened but by noon six were set up across Segamat, Kota Tinggi and Kluang with 298 families affected.

Three rivers have breached the respective danger levels; Sungai Segamat in Segamat Kecil currently at 37.55m, followed by Sungai Gemas (19.13m) and Sungai Kahang in Kampung Kahang Contoh (15.7m).

The number of flood victims, relief centres opened have been rising steadily alongside river levels since the state was pelted by continous rain on Sunday.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department had earlier announced that Johor was one of the states that was put on red alert following a three-day forecast of continous rain during the Northeast Monsoon.

The adverse weather was expected to be followed by floods.
