BESUT: Identical twin sisters Nik Nurul Fatikha Nik Aziz and Nik Nurul Fathira Nik Aziz from Kampung La, Hulu Besut here are looking forward to go to school with their new school gear.
However, their excitement was cut short as their school equipment was washed away by the recent flood.
It was not the first time the 12-year-old twins became flood victims. They admitted that they were used to the disaster and related how they had once missed their first day of school when they were in Year One at SK Kampung La.
"We had better luck back then as it had been a minor flood," they told Berita Harian when met at the Masjid Kampung La temporary flood relief centre today.
At the time, their aunt Nik Azizah Nik Muhamad, 47, managed to keep their school clothes on the roof of their house.
Fatikha said during the flood this time around, their house was severely damaged from the disaster and it forced them to be evacuated to a relief centre till today.
She said she wanted to return home as her friends have already done so after the flood waters subsided. She said many of her friends were busy making preparations for school.
"But we are still here and unsure when we can return home. School is opening tomorrow and classes will commence as usual," she said.
Nik Azizah said the recent flood was the worst they ever experienced since she lived at her house 25 years ago.
She said they will have to repair the house before they can reside there again.
"We are stuck on how to find money to rebuild the house as all the parts were damaged including the roof and the floors.
"We are pleading for any parties to help us to fix the house so that we can return home as soon as possible."
Nik Azizah said that they really needed a house as shelter as her daughter is pregnant.
"If our house cannot be fixed anytime soon, we have to appeal to stay at the relief centre longer as we are concerned for our safety if we go back to our damaged home." she added.
