KUALA LUMPUR: Kelantan and Terengganu have been hammered by 65 episodes of floods since the deluge triggered by the northeast monsoon began on Dec 17.

Some 44 areas in Kelantan were hit by floods, with Pasir Mas being the worst-hit district after it recorded 14 flooding incidents.

Meanwhile, in Terengganu, 21 flooding incidents had occurred, including eight episodes in the Kemaman district.

The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Nasir Md Noh said the precipitation recorded at several locations in Kelantan have exceeded the state's long-term monthly average rainfall which stood at 500mm.

Nasir said the Kampung Wakaf Raja station in Pasir Putih recorded the highest rainfall in Kelantan over the last 24 hours which amounted to 625mm. The Serdang station in Bachok also recorded the state's highest average rainfall at 903mm in the past 48 hours.

Meanwhile, in Terengganu, the highest amount of rainfall was measured at the Kalabe station in Besut which came up to 732mm in the last 24 hours.

Between Dec 17 and Dec 19, the station received 1046 mm of rainfall, higher than the long-term monthly average precipitation for Terengganu, which was only 663mm.

Mohd Nasir said Besut, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Kemaman and Setiu were the areas affected by floods in Terengganu. Eight areas in Kelantan, namely Jeli, Kota Bharu, Kuala Krai, Machang, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh and Tanah Merah, were also facing a similar predicament.
