BESUT: The remains of a senior citizen was left stranded in her family home in Kampung Gaung here for almost 14 hours when flood waters rose early in the morning.

It was learnt that Che Gayah Mohamad, 81, had died around 8pm yesterday of old age after being bedridden for almost six months.

Grandson Nik Mohd Fhaiez Mohd Khalil, 30, said the body was supposed to be buried last night itself, but due to an incomplete documentation process, where the permit for the grave could not be finalised, the burial had to be postponed to today.

"About 3am, floodwaters began to inundate the house's compounds and almost entered the house. All of us ended up stranded and unable to go out.

"We tried to contact the flood operations room but failed. So, we decided to wait and see if there were any rescue personnel who would come and provide assistance.

"However, up until 8am there was no sign of help so that we can take our grandmother's remains to Besut Hospital to get the death certificate," said Fhaiez when contacted here today.

He said they also had to resort to asking for help via social media.

"Thankfully about 10am, there was a boat that entered the area and helped us to take our grandmother's remains to the main road.

"Her body will be buried later in the evening at the Kampung Gaung Muslim cemetery, which is situated on higher ground," said Fhaiez.
