BESUT: A 28-year-old man choked to death on "sup tulang" at his home in Kampung Alor Selising, Jertih, here, yesterday.

Wan Azlan Wan Ishak had never tried the bone stew dish before because he had choked on fish bones once.

His sister, Wan Suria Wan Ishak, 32, said the incident happened just after Wan Azlan, a hardware store clerk, had returned home from work about 5.15pm.

She said her parents were at home at the time.

"Lan (Azlan) went straight to the kitchen to reheat the soup. He had never eaten any kind of beef stew before. His favourite dish was chicken. He also did not eat fish because he had choked on fish bones once.

"He choked on the meat while eating the stew. He was probably hungry, so he swallowed the meat even though it was tough.

"I tried to help him but was unsuccessful. I got him to recite the syahadah before he lost consciousness.

"He was taken to Besut Hospital where he was confirmed dead about 5.50pm."

Wan Suria said her brother was close to their family and liked by his friends.

"We miss him dearly but we have accepted his death on the third day of Hari Raya Aidiladha.

"Our mother said it would be difficult to run her daily affairs without my brother."

Wan Suria said her brother was buried at the Kampung Padang Landak cemetery.
