KUALA LUMPUR: The country's 11th Armed Forces chief, General (Rtd) Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Abdul Hamid, died today at the Tuanku Mizan Armed Forces Hospital in Wangsa Maju.

Abdul Rahman, 83, succumbed to a lung infection at 2.15am.

His health had deteriorated since yesterday after being admitted to the hospital on May 25, read a statement from the Malaysian Armed Forces headquarters.

He is survived by wife Puan Sri Rosilah Ahmad and four children.

Abdul Rahman's remains were buried with full military honours at the Sakinah Raudah Muslim Cemetery in Sungai Besi, after Zohor prayers at the Khalid Al Walid Mosque at the Defence Ministry in Jalan Padang Tembak.

Abdul Rahman joined the Federation Military College's (FMC - later known as Royal Military College or RMC) Cadet Wing in January 1957 and was commissioned as a second-lieutenant into the Royal Malay Regiment in December 1958.

In March 1993, he was appointed to helm the Armed Forces before retiring in Feb 1994.

Abdul Rahman had the distinction of serving as acting Penang governor for three months shortly after his retirement in 1994, following the death of the governor at the time.

He had also served as the president of the Retired Armed Forces Officers' Association from 2016 to 2022.

Meanwhile, Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Affendi Buang and wife, Armed Forces Family Welfare Association chairman Puan Sri Tengku Muhaini Sultan Ahmad Shah, conveyed their condolences to Abdul Rahman's family.

"May God Almighty reward him for all his good deeds and contributions.

"May his soul be blessed and placed among the faithful," they wrote in a Facebook post.
