KUALA LUMPUR: The country recorded 1,420 new dengue cases during the 20th epidemiological week (EW), which was between May 15 and May 21, 2022.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said new dengue cases reported in the 20th EW was 32.2 per cent higher than the 1,074 cases reported the previous week.

However, he said no deaths from dengue fever occurred during the week. The ministry reported two dengue-related deaths the previous week.

Dr Noor Hisham said a total 16,145 dengue cases have been reported until the 20th EW this year.

This figure, he said, was 52.4 per cent higher than the 10,597 dengue cases detected within the same period last year.

For this year, he said nine dengue-related deaths have occurred so far, compared to five such cases for the same period last year.

"During the 20th EW, the ministry identified 41 localities in Selangor - compared to 36 localities the previous week - followed by three localities in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, and one each in Melaka and Sabah.

"All segments of society must play a proactive role to ensure their residential areas and workplaces do not become breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquitoes.

"Resident committees, joint management boards, Rukun Tetangga and other relevant authorities should immediately mobilise the local community to search and destroy Aedes breeding grounds.

"Use repellents and aerosol sprays to kill adult Aedes mosquitoes in hidden spots within your premises," he said.
