MELAKA: A new school, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Krubong here, is expected to be opened at the end of next month, according to a state executive councillor.

State Education and Technology Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said the school, built at a cost of RM24 million, has 24 classrooms to accommodate 840 students.

He said the new school would help to reduce the density of students at nearby schools such as SMK Paya Rumput, SMK Malim and SMK Tun Haji Abdul Malek.

"The state government is very concerned about school development, so as to provide a comfortable learning environment for children. We will assess the needs regularly," he told reporters when met at his Hari Raya open house here today.

Meanwhile, Rais said schools in Melaka will receive lockers in stages to store textbooks to address the heavy school bags issue, but the number to be selected is still under discussion. – BERNAMA
