TUARAN: A picnic outing among friends at Kampung Rugading here ended in tragedy when one of them died after he drowned in a river.

The 26-year-old victim was confirmed dead after being found by villagers at about 4.30pm who assisted in the search.

District Fire and Rescue Station Chief Abdul Qawie Abdul Gapar said they received an emergency call on the incident at 4.22pm.

He said it was reported two people had drowned at the river near in the village.

Ten personnel were rushed to the location which is about 32km from the station.

"As soon as the rescuers arrived, the two victims were found by the villagers but one of them was unconscious and confirmed dead by a medical officer from Tuaran.

"A friend of the victim, a man in his 20s, was rescued but complained of shortness of breath and was given initial treatment before being rushed to Tuaran hospital," he said when contacted.

Abdul Qawie added that the deceased's body was handed over to the police for further action.
