SETIU: Continuous heavy rains over the past 48 hours have forced 1,237 people from 339 families to evacuate their homes as the fifth wave of floods hit the state.

As at 8pm today, 22 flood evacuation centres have been opened in four districts, namely Kemaman (12), Setiu (four), Hulu Terengganu (three) and Besut (three).

In Kemaman, 582 people from 162 families were evacuated to schools and civic halls on higher grounds.

Here, 154 people from 54 families were evacuated to four evacuation centres while in Hulu Terengganu 413 people from 103 families to three centres.

In Besut, 89 people from 20 families have sought shelter at three evacuation centres.

The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat, in updating the flood situation, said heavy rainfall across the state has not abated for several days.

Most major rivers in Terengganu have breached their respective warning levels with Sungai Kemaman, Sungai Besut and Sungai Dungun at Kuala Jengai all above their danger levels.

Agencies involved in flood rescue operations are on high alert as continuous rain is expected in the next 24 hours.
