KOTA BARU: Twenty-six members of the General Operations Force (GOF) famed Senoi Praaq including an officer will be sent to Kelantan to assist wildlife rangers im tracking down tigers.

GOF North Brigade deputy commander, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Noh Khamis said the team from 3rd battalion based in Perak, would arrive in Kelantan on Jan 19.

Apart from hunting the tigers in Gua Musang area, he said the team would also cover forest areas in Machang.

He said this was the first time the battalion was sent to Kelantan to help track down tigers.

"This Senoi Praaq team are experts in tracking and among the best trackers in the battalion.

"This is first time they were asked to assist the relevant authorities in hunting for the tiger. Before this, their assistance was sought by the Wildlife and National Parks Department for other purposes," he told the NST.

The Senoi Praaq are a unit made up almost entirely of Orang Asli members. Its history spans back to the days of the Malayan Emergency, when it first developed its reputation as an elite jungle warfare fighting force.

It is learnt that the deployment of the Senoi Praaq GOF to Gua Musang was made following a request by the Gua Musang District Office a few days ago.

The additional manpower is deemed necessary to aid the authorities to track down the tigers in the Orang Asli settlements, especially in Pos Bihai.
