KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Negara has approved the setting-up of three Select Committees as part of efforts to transform the Upper House and Parliament.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said the select committee reference terms will contain the purpose of its establishment, allow up to five members including chairman and the committee being in place for two years or two terms following its formation.

The three select committees are the People's Wellbeing Select Committee; Sociocultural, Communication and Integrity Committee and the Anti-Corruption Governance select committee.

"I would like to express thanks and congratulate Dewan Negara Speaker Tan Sri Rais Yatim for taking proactive steps in transforming Parliament especially Dewan Negara through the select committee's establishment.

"The government fully supports the move through a motion tabled as reported in the Senate-House Committee Statement," she said.

Mas Ermieyati said the Select Committees are allowed to call a person before them to record statements and views on anything related to the terms of reference subject to the provisions as contained in the Dewan Negara Standing Order.

"The report or statement issued by the Select Committee shall be tabled in the house," she said.
