KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) welcomes the Education Ministry's decision to reopen schools in stages beginning Sept 1.

However, its president Aminuddin Awang said the reopening should prioritise classes for those sitting for public examinations.

"The reopening for examination classes is more important, as they need it more. It is a good decision and we fully support it," he said when contacted today.

Previously the ministry announced the reopening of schools in stages in March for primary schools and April for secondary.

However, Covid-19 outbreaks reported in schools had forced a return to online learning.

Aminuddin believed the ministry and relevant agencies have taken into account all risks before reopening schools this time around.

With over half the school teachers having received their Covid-19 vaccines, he said it was a wise decision to finally reopen schools.

"We hope by the time schools reopen, all teachers are vaccinated. The transition from online learning to classrooms should not be a hurdle for both students and teachers because this is what they did before," he added.

The Education Ministry announced yesterday that online learning would continue until end of August before moving to physical teaching and learning sessions in stages from Sept 1.

As of July 16, 61.3 per cent or 253,366 teachers and administrators as well as 10,876 (46.33 per cent) support staff have received their Covid-19 vaccines.
