ROMPIN: Eighty per cent of adult population in Pulau Tioman near here have received their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

State Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin said on his Twitter account today that the island was the first location in the country where a majority of people had received one dose count today.

Meanwhile, Pulau Tioman Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme (NIP) coordinator Dr Ahmad Hafiz Mohamad said a total of 2,003 people aged above 18 had been vaccinated.

"The NIP was held for six days since June 28. The residents are scheduled to receive their second dose at the end of this month.

"Yesterday, was the final day of NIP in Tioman and the 50 medical staff from the Rompin health office will return to the mainland today," he said in a text message.

It was reported last week that the vaccination programme in Tioman targeted 1,700 people living on the island including villagers and tourism industry operators.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, during his visit to the vaccination centres (PPVs) at Pulau Tioman on June 29, said the state government would propose for the reopening of the tourism sector on the island after 80 percent of the 3,500 people on the island complete their vaccination.

He said the proposal would be forwarded to the National Security Council to allow the island to be opened to at least local tourists to make it a tourism green bubble.
