KOTA BARU: Police have compounded 496 individuals and company owners for flouting various standard operating procedures (SOP) of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Kelantan deputy police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Muhammad Piah said they were issued with the compounds in a series of operations between June 1 and yesterday.

He said the 496 had to pay compounds of between RM1,500 to RM20,000 each for breaching the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).

"A majority of them could not produce valid letters for interstate and inter district travel, and involved in offences such as not practicing physical distancing and not wearing face masks.

"The companies were compounded for failing to provide Covid-19 checking equipment for their clients," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after visiting Kampung Pulau Tukang Dollah here today which would be placed under Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) beginning tomorrow until July 8 following a spike in Covid-19 cases recently.

Abdullah said those who were issued with the compounds, however, can ask for a discount.

"Police only issue the compounds for violating Act 342, but offenders can still ask for the discount from the state health department," he added.

He said police would continue to carry out its operation against those flouting the SOP from time to time especially at Covid-19 hot spots and public areas.

Kelantan recorded a two digit figure in new Covid-19 cases yesterday of 81, the first in two months.
