KUANTAN: Incessant rain continued to lash the Pahang capital for the second consecutive day, leaving some roads near Sungai Lembing submerged.

Heavy downpour which ended the hot and dry spell here has now raised concerns among those living in low-lying areas about possible recurrence of the monsoon floods which wreaked havoc in January.

Sungai Lembing assemblyman Datuk Md Sohaimi Mohamed Shah said the flash floods which inundated certain parts of Sungai Lembing town yesterday has completely receded but the weather remains uncertain.

"It started raining again today and the villagers at low-lying areas have been told to standby in case their homes were affected. Some sections of the road between Kuantan and Sungai Lembing is closed to all vehicles due to high water levels.

"Yesterday, some houses were affected by the flash floods and they managed to clean their premises last night. The weather has been quite a surprise but we have to be prepared to evacuate potential flood victims," he said when contacted.

Md Sohaimi said his service centre is in the midst of coordinating assistance to those whose homes were hit by flash floods and evacuate them to the nearby secondary school if the situation worsens.

Meanwhile, a Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said firemen had helped evacuate a woman at Kampung Pandan 2 about 5.30am today.

He said the victim's house compound was under 2m of water forcing firemen to deploy a boat to bring her out before sending her to a relative's house.

Meanwhile, state Civil Defence Force (APM) Disaster Management (operations) assistant director Mohd Zairosnizam Tarmizi said they are monitoring the situation on possible floods including at neighbouring districts which have also experienced heavy rain.

At the height of the floods in January, ten districts were struck forcing some 27,000 people to be evacuated.
