KUALA LUMPUR: Be cautious of people impersonating as Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) senior officers or deputy public prosecutor.

This follows yesterday's arrest of four men who impersonated MACC senior officers and deputy prosecutors on the pretext of helping the victims settled ongoing cases.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki said the commission viewed the matter seriously and that it would not hesitate to take action.

"MACC would like to advise the public to be cautious of the tactics used by these suspects, including claims that they knew senior officers of the commission (by) showing pictures of themselves with the senior officers and cards."

These suspects were known to show off pphotographs of them attending anti-corruption programmes by the MACC, he said.

"These tactics were being used by the suspects to convince victims," he said in a statement today.

Bernama recently reported that suspects, aged between 39 and 54, who had impersonated MACC officers, were picked up at two separate locations in Putrajaya and Melaka yesterday.

Three of the suspects, including a person believed to be the mastermind known as "Dato Roy", were arrested at a hotel in Putrajaya at 4.30pm. The fourth suspect was arrested at his house in Melaka four hours later.

They have been remanded six days until Dec 22 to facilitate investigations.

MACC source told Bernama that the suspects were alleged to have solicited bribes from the victims in exchange for reduced charges and lighter offence, as well as to lift the freeze on the victims' bank accounts.

"According to our intelligence, members of the group were believed to have entered the compound of the MACC headquarters to take their pictures so that they can convince their victims that they are really MACC officers," said the source.
