GEORGE TOWN: Police have recorded the statement of the 71-year-old driver who was involved in a crash at a condominium in Island Park here yesterday that claimed the life of a 49-year-old woman.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong said the elderly woman was questioned this afternoon.

The senior citizen was admitted to the hospital with chest injuries after the 11.45am incident.

"According to the investigating officer, the driver's statement has just been taken," he told the New Straits Times when asked on the progress of police probe into the matter.

Soffian said to date, the police had recorded statements from three individuals to assist in their probe.

"We believe she (the driver) did not mean for the accident to happen," he added.

Kim Hui Ping, 49, was reportedly crushed to death beneath an overturned car which had earlier hit her and smashed into a concrete border wall. The car then fell 20ft onto a back lane and dragged her with it, before landing on her.

The driver of the car, a 71-year-old woman, sustained chest injuries. Both are residents of the condominium.

The condominium is located on higher ground than the road where the car was found.

Initial investigation showed that Kim was crossing the road to get to her parked car before she was knocked over by the Toyota Vios driver, who was making her way into the condominium parking lot.

The driver who panicked, accidentally stepped on the accelerator and rammed into the concrete border wall before dropping onto a backlane 20ft below.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
