KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Singapore have taken stock of the progress of discussions relating to the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR) project today.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said more details on the HSR project would eventually be made.

"Both sides will announce further details on the HSR project through a Joint Statement in due course," it said in a statement.

PMO said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin and his Singapore counterpart, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had a video conference call on the HSR Project, in view of the Dec 31 deadline for the second and final extension of the suspension of the project.

The two prime ministers, it said, had gone through the progress of discussions and gained a good understanding of the two countries' positions.

It added that both prime ministers had also reaffirmed the strong bilateral relations between the two countries covering many areas of cooperation and the sincere desire to further strengthen these relations for mutual benefit.

It was reported that the construction of the HSR project had been suspended since September 2018 and was due to resume at the end of May, but was deferred further until the end of the year.

Lee was quoted saying during an event on July 30 this year to mark the official resumption of the Rapid Transit System linking Woodlands and Johor Baru that Malaysia had given Singapore certain proposals on changes to the HSR project and that discussions were ongoing.

On Aug 26, MyHSR Corporation had launched two tenders (for a land consultant as well as an environmental, social, and heritage impact assessment consultant) for the HSR project.

The HSR line is 350 km and is expected to reduce travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to 90 minutes.
