SETIU: Heavy rain over the past 24 hours throughout the state and rising water levels in major rivers in five districts have forced the evacuation of 1,046 people today.

As rainfall is not expected to stop anytime within the next 24 hours, rescuers from the agencies are on red alert to evacuate more people tonight.

The worst affected district is Kemaman, where 659 people from 156 families have sought shelter at three relief centres.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt-Col (PA) Che Adam Abdul Rahman said his men were on red alert as low-lying areas in Chukai, Kemaman were expected to receive the impact of overflowing rivers later tonight.

"My men are now on the ground at flood prone areas, not just in Kemaman but all districts affected by floods," he said, while giving an update on the flood situation in Terengganu.

He said 329 people in Dungun, from 96 families, have been evacuated to two flood relief centres; while in Kuala Nerus, 27 people from nine families have sought shelter at three relief centres.

Rescuers have so far evacuated 17 people from four families to one relief centre in Kuala Terengganu; and 14 people from five families at one shelter in Marang.

Che Adam said Kemaman received the heaviest rainfall since early this morning.

"Water that flows to the Kemaman basin has breached danger levels.

"We expect low lying areas along Sungai Kemaman, especially in Chukai to be inundated by floods within the next 24 hours," he added.
