TUMPAT: Some 30 villagers from Kampung Simpangan here have been keeping their boats for almost nine months either under their homes or along the Golok riverbank.

This villagers would only use these boats, mostly made from fibre, during the monsoon season.

Now, the villagers are ready to use them and have started to clean and make other necessary preparations as the rainy season has started and floods may occur.

One of the villagers Mohamad Nor Awang said the last time he used his fibre boat was in the previous flood.

"My house will normally be submerged by up to 1m of flood waters every time the rainy season hits the village.

"This forces me to use the boat to ferry my family members including my wife and three grandchildren to a nearby flood relief centre.

"Apart from that, I will also use the boat to transport my important belongings to a safer place," said Mohamad Nor.

The 76-year-old former Rela member said he bought the fibre boat several years ago for RM2,000.

Mohamad Nor said his boat was left under a tree close to the riverbank.

Kampung Simpangan is among the areas in Kelantan affected by the yearly flood season.

The village, located along the Golok river, has nearly 300 villagers and a majority of them own either "perahu" or fibre boats to help them move around during the monsoon season.
