JOHOR BARU: Attendance at religious schools in Pasir Gudang have seen a significant decline over the last few days due to parents' concern over the spread of Covid-19 in the area.

State Islamic Affairs Committee chairman Tosrin Jarvanthi said this follows the discovery of a Covid-19 case at a primary school in Pasir Gudang, which was confirmed by the Health Ministry, that led to the temporary closure of the school.

He said this led to the closure of a religious school that is located near the primary school as a precautionary measure.

"We are aware of the Covid-19 case at the primary school and are monitoring the situation. So far, only one religious school is closed, namely Sekolah Agama As Syakirin," said Tosrin.

He said a decision on whether to close other religious schools in Pasir Gudang will depend on whether there are Covid-19 cases reported in the area.

"If there are Covid-19 cases reported in the area, we will take the necessary measures, including temporarily closing the schools in the area. We are also ready to ask the students, teachers and staff to undergo swab tests to ensure they are safe," said Tosrin when met yesterday.

On Tuesday, the Johor Health Department recorded 10 new Covid-19 cases bringing the total number of active cases in Johor to 55.
