TUARAN: Hundreds of motorists here were forced to turn back when the road they were travelling on was cut off by landslides and floodwaters after continuous heavy rain since 6am, today.

It is learnt that two landslides occurred at about 1pm along Jalan Kiulu-Tamparuli near Kampung Rangalau Baru and Kampung Kionsom Lama in Kiulu.

In Bayaon, Kiulu, the main road was impassable since 7am after a nearby river overflowed.

It is learnt that the district Public Works Department is carrying out cleaning works in the affected areas.

Kiulu resident Edwin Matusah, 36, said he and his family were supposed to head home to Kota Kinabalu, but had to return to their 'kampung' as most roads towards the city centre are impassable.

They said alternative roads are also cut off due to landslides and flooding.

In Tamparuli, the Jambatan Lama route was closed after Sungai Tuaran reached a dangerous level and overflowed to a 'tamu' site.

Residents at the Taman Sri Rugading housing area were also trapped after roads leading to Telipok town were inundated, with several parked vehicles submerged.

In the highland district of Ranau, two landslides stretching between 20 and 50 metres were reported at 10.30am.

The landslides occurred at Km88.20 of Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Sandakan near Kinabalu Park and at Km86 near the Bundu Tuhan junction.

Cleaning work is being carried out by a JKR Ranau concession company.
