KANGAR: Perlis police today began their surprise house-to-house spot checks in the district to ensure that no individuals have returned illegally to their hometowns by using lesser-known routes.

District police chief Superintendent Wari Kiew said 25 houses were inspected from 8am to 2pm.

He said members of the public were surprised by the presence of police personnel conducting checks at the houses.

"These surprise checks will continue throughout the Hari Raya period to ensure that the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) standard operating procedures are complied with.

"To date, we have yet to issue any compounds. However, we advise the public not to take the matter lightly," he said.

Meanwhile, checks by Berita Harian together with personnel from the Kangar district police headquarters showed that the number of vehicles in several areas appear to have shown an increase.

Checks were also done at several public areas which serve as shopping havens for those about to celebrate Hari Raya.

Although somewhat crowded, the situation was under control thanks to the presence of police personnel who enforced the social distancing rule.
