KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded another double-digit of new Covid-19 infections yesterday with 69, two days after charting a similar drop in cases with 85 on Wednesday.

This is the lowest number of new infections recorded since the Movement Control Order (MCO) came into force on March 18.

The last time the country reported new cases in double-digit was on March 14 with 35 new cases.

The 69 new confirmed cases reported to the Health Ministry today brought the cumulative total of cases to 5,251.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said a total of 201 people were given a clean bill of health, bringing the total number of Covid-19 patients who have recovered from the infection to 2,967.

“A total of 51 patients are being treated at the intensive care units, in which, 26 require breathing support,” said Dr Noor Hisham in his daily press conference on the Covid-19 situation in the country.

He said two Covid-19 fatality was reported to the ministry’s National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) as noon today, raising the death toll from the deadly virus in the country to 86 (1.64 per cent).

The 85th victim (or case 5,064), Dr Noor Hisham said, was an 85-year-old Malaysian citizen.

He had close contact with case 4,657 related to the Bali Patients-Under-Investigation (PUI) cluster. He was treated for blood cancer at a private medical centre and later transferred to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, Pahang on April 15 and confirmed dead on April 16 at 3.30pm.

The 86th victim (case 5,183), he said, was also a Malaysian citizen aged 85. He had a history of hypertension and stroke. He also had close contact with case 2,321.

He was admitted to the University Malaya Medical Centre on April 1 and was pronounced dead on April 16 at 8.56pm.

“The Health Ministry conveys its condolences to the families of the deceased,” Dr Noor Hisham added.
