GEORGE TOWN: Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd will not be reducing its flights out of Malaysia.

Its country manager (Malaysia and Brunei) Anna Choi said the carrier’s current plans to reduce capacity would not affect its twice-daily flights from Penang to Hong Kong and its four daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong.

“In our early planning of flight operations, we had increased our flight, Cathay Pacific, to the whole world.

“However, since the events in Hong Kong, we will be looking at lower flight loads.

“Since June our flights from Penang and Kuala Lumpur have not been affected by the tensions in Hong Kong, so we will continue operations here as usual,” she said after a Chinese New Year luncheon with members of the media at E& O Hotel here today.

Choi said that Cathay Pacific had been serving the Malaysian market well and expected to see growth instead of cuts.

“We are expecting our shares becoming stronger,” she said, adding that the airlines was also expecting to see an increase in passenger capacity.

“We have a combination of passengers going from Malaysia to Hong Kong and using Hong Kong as a transit for their onward destination.

“During Christmas we experienced 100 per cent capacity in some flights from Penang to Kuala Lumpur and we are hopeful that our passenger capacity will continue to improve.”
